Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia (HTNS) congratulates the Société Vieille Maison Association (l’association Société Vieille Maison) on moving forward as a finalist in Next Great Save. This competition is being organized by the National Trust for Canada and is sponsored by Ecclesiastical Insurance. The winner, chosen by popular vote, will be awarded $50,000 to put toward the conservation of an historic site.

La Vieille Maison is the only Nova Scotian building to reach the finals. It is also the oldest building and the only Acadian-associated site among the ten finalists. Its preservation for public access will support the telling of a major story in the history of Nova Scotia and Canada.

Dating from 1796, La Vieille Maison is a fine example of the homes built by Acadians upon their return to Nova Scotia after the Expulsion/Le Grand Dérangement. As a major draw for tourists, La Vieille Maison promises to benefit the economy of Southwestern Nova Scotia.

This competition merits wide community support. Public voting begins at 3:00 pm on January 20 and ends at 3:00 pm on February 22, 2023. Individuals may vote once a day at www.nationaltrustcanada.ca/nextgreatsave. HTNS encourages everyone to vote and to enlist others to do the same!
